Condominiums at a race track. The idea seemed ludicrous when it first was mentioned a decade ago. But very few, if any, people at that time could have predicted the astonishing growth of NASCAR racing into one of the most popular spectator sports in the country. Regular visitors to Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, just a few miles east of Fayette County, instantly recognize the familiar sight of a nine-story tower overshadowing the main entrance and the Richard Petty Grandstand. That building, known as 1500 Tara Place, contains 46 luxury condominiums, including 10 with a penthouse view, that overlook the fourth turn of the 1.54-mile track at AMS. The units first became available in the mid-1990s and were immediately in demand, even though the least expensive sold at more than $200,000. Aside from a panoramic view of all AMS events, residents at the complex share a swimming pool, two championship tennis courts, an exercise room and a clubhouse, as well as two fishing lakes. All units have private parking and 24-hour security, as well as accomodations for up to 30 people in theater-style seating on race day. Pre-race pit passes, closed-circuit television and private catering are among the race amenities available to condo owners.
