Dunn, Wells continue at county's helm

Fayette County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn and Vice Chairman Linda Wells will continue in those posts for 2002.

But Commissioner Herb Frady cast a lone dissenting vote when commissioners made the appointments last week, saying he doesn't like some things about the direction the county is going in.

"We're a little off on ... some issues," he said.

Frady voted against the decision to end the county's agreement with local cities for use of the County Jail, and he pushed for a complete rollback of taxes to account for inflation.

He also was opposed to the decision to sue the town of Tyrone over its sewer contract with the city of Fairburn, he said.

"These are issues I feel firmly about," he said.

Dunn and Wells, who were elected in 1998, joined former Commissioner Harold Bost in moving the county in a decidedly more conservative direction.

Bost, who served as chairman in 1999 and 2000, was reelected as a commissioner for the 2001-2004 term, but stepped down as chairman in favor of Dunn, saying two years was enough. But then in March he resigned as a commissioner citing personal concerns, and Commissioner Peter Pfeifer was elected to finish out his term.

Both Pfeifer and Commissioner A.G. VanLandingham, elected in 2000 to replace Glen Gosa, who chose not to run for reelection, have promised to continue the conservative trend.
