School board reappoints officers

The chairman and vice chairman posts for the Fayette County Board of Education will not change from 2001 to 2002.

Chairman Mickey Littlefield and Vice Chairman Greg Powers were reelected unanimously at Monday's called board meeting, the first of the new year. There were no other nominations for either position.

The board also voted to leave its meeting dates unchanged this year. Regular meetings will be conducted each third Monday at 7 p.m.

Special called meetings will sometimes take place on the first Monday, usually a work session, at 4:30 p.m. Those meetings have previously been scheduled for 4 p.m. Other called meetings that might take place in the morning will be scheduled for 8:30 a.m. instead of 8, as in the past.

Work sessions are conducted as needed, and not necessarily every month.

The law firm of Harben and Hartley in Gainesville was retained once again as the school system's legal counsel, on the recommendation of Superintendent John DeCotis, "based on their successful and competent past performance."

Also retained was the Atlanta-based Weatherly Law Firm to handle ongoing and comprehensive special education cases for the coming year. "They have served well for the past several years and have a national reputation for these types of cases," said DeCotis.
