Meeting set to discuss ultra-light pattern for Falcon Field airport

The possible creation of a special air traffic pattern at Falcon Field for ultra-light aircraft will be discussed at a meeting there Saturday, Jan. 12.

Ultra-light aircraft operators have been invited to attend the meeting, along with tenants of the airport and officials from the Peachtree Flight Center. The meeting will be held after the annual chili cook-off sponsored by the local Short Wing Piper Club, said Airport Manager Jim Savage.

While most aircraft operate at a minimum altitude of 1000 feet, ultra-light aircraft operate at a minimum altitude of 500 feet, which can make them difficult to spot by other pilots.

The use of a special pattern for ultra-light aircraft would allow other aircraft to locate them more easily, according to officials.

Another complicating factor is that ultra-light aircraft usually can't use radio to communicate effectively because of wind flowing into the microphone.
