Union City sees housing boom in 2001

For one of South Fulton's cities, 2001 was the year growth hit home.

City Manager Sonya Carter said the city experienced its biggest building period ever.

Carter said the city will see more than 1,000 new homes spring up in the next year or so as developers rush to the south side of Atlanta.

Most of the new homes that have been approved are single-family homes, but residents also will see Windsor Forest start developing soon on the west side of town.

Windsor Forest is an upscale multifamily development that features 192 units, Carter said.

The development area is concentrated on Highpoint Road and features a variety of housing styles and prices.

"We've got homes starting from $110,000 all the way up to $200,000," she said.

Carter said the building boom can be traced to several different factors. Two of the biggest factors are availability of land and transportation needs.

"There's a lot of development that's stopped on the north side. We've got great access to South Fulton Parkway, U.S. 29 and Interstate 85," she said.

In addition to residential building, Carter said the town will also start seeing a boom in commercial endeavors.
