Delta plays Santa to Christian City kids

More than 65 children from Christian City got a huge holiday surprise last weekend a trip to Disney World.

Since 1981, Delta Air Lines has sponsored an annual party for the kids at Christian City. In addition to donating more than $9,000 in gifts, Delta employees raised $28,000 to provide the youths a weekend at Disney World.

"We're especially proud of the giving spirit of Delta employees," said Ray Valeika, Delta's senior vice president for technical operations. "For several months, the planning committee has sponsored cooking contests, doughnut sales, garage sales and many other activities to raise money to do something special this year."

Following Santa's distribution of gifts, the excited group received a special surprise as Santa announced, "We're going to Orlando. We're going to Disney World."

"The faces of the children made our hard work over the last several months and the past 20 years well worth it," said Rick Hoy, head of this year's planning committee and a manager in Delta's technical operations division.

Christian City was opened in 1965 and is home to nearly 65 children who live with full-time "house parents" as a family unit in cottages.
