Fairburn OKs 154-home development By JOHN
THOMPSON
Fairburn residents will see 154 homes added to their community after the City Council decided to annex 56 acres into the city Wednesday night. The new homes are set for Plantation Road and will be a minimum of 1,400 square feet in size. The annexation passed unanimously after being deferred last week. Councilman Harvey Melear wanted developer Jay Knight to increase the sizes of his homes and Knight agreed. Knight also said the development would feature 21 percent green space and 90 percent of the homes would feature an architectural accent, such as brick masonry. But not all the residents in Fairburn were happy about the proposed annexation. During the public hearing, Ed Mellon said Knight's development had been rejected by Fulton County and he urged Fairburn to do the same. "It doesn't meet with Fulton County land development standards. The school system can't handle it," he said. Knight countered by saying this was not the same development Fulton County voted down. He had a larger project encompassing more property that would have added more than 200 apartments to the community. Other residents supported the project, including Albert Harper who lives on Milam Road. "We need the police protection in our area that this development would bring by being annexed," he said. The council approved both the annexation and a rezoning from Fulton County's R-4 residential to Planned Development, which will allow 154 homes on the site.
