Civitans sponsor All-Children's Playground

The Peachtree City Civitans donated $4,300 to the All Children's Playground recently. The money came from the very- successful Sixth Annual Civitan Great Chili Challenge held in October.

The club is expecting another $900 contribution to come in from separate donations, which would put them at $5,200 and qualify them for a Gold Sponsorship.

The Civitan's effort will bring the All Children's Playground committee within $5,000 of being able to proceed with Phase II of the facility. Phase I, which cost $50,000, was opened in August.

Phase II will also cost $50,000, and it is hoped that the money can be raised in time to open that phase in Spring 2002. About $45,000 has been raised for Phase II.

Phase III will cost $100,000. The facility is being funded completely through donations and is being constructed using volunteers guided by trained installers.

The Luther T. Holt Memorial All Children's Playground is a specially designed and constructed facility that enables children of all abilities to play and learn together. The equipment is totally accessible to children using wheelchairs or walkers, using ramps and rubberized ground surfacing to ensure smooth access. The play equipment is roofed to provide shade, and the facility is set in quiet and scenic Picnic Park, behind City Hall and fronted by Lake Peachtree.

The playground is named after Luther T. Holt, a Peachtree City resident and well-respected member of the Recreation Commission. Mr. Holt passed away a year ago, and before his death he helped spearhead the effort to make the playground a reality. Due to his great passion for the playground effort and for the well being of youth in the city, the City Council approved a request from the Recreation Department to name the facility in his honor.

Civitan is an international, non-profit, charitable service club that works closely with organizations that support children and young adults who have physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Civitan was founded in 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama, and the Peachtree City Civitan Club was chartered in April 1996 with assistance from the Newnan club.

The Great Chili Challenge has been the club's main fundraiser since its inception and continues to grow every year. For information about the club or the 2002 Great Chili Challenge, call 770-631-2311.
