Fayette teen killed in head-on collision Tuesday afternoon

A Fayette teen was killed Tuesday afternoon when his car struck another vehicle head-on on Ga. Highway 279 near North Drive.

Marvin Lee Moore Jr., 16, was attempting to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone when the crash occurred, according to Lt. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

A family of three who were traveling in the vehicle struck by Moore received minor injuries. Geoffrey Watkiss, 26, his wife, Amy Watkiss, 24, and their son, Alex Watkiss, 1, all of Fayetteville, were treated and released from Southern Regional Medical Center, said Woodie.

The Watkiss family was traveling north on Hwy. 279 an a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck when Moore crossed the center line to pass the vehicle, striking the truck immediately, according to Woodie.

A third vehicle was struck by debris from the collision, although the driver was unhurt.

All the drivers and passengers involved were wearing their seatbelts when the collision occurred, according to sheriff's deputies.

Moore, who was driving a 2001 Honda Civic was pronounced dead at the scene.
