Students get basketball tickets

The Coweta Community Foundation made an appreciated Christmas gift to Coweta County School System athletic programs Tuesday.

The foundation donated 100 tickets to the Dec. 27 ACC-SEC Shootout at Philips Arena, for use by student athletes. The Shootout, which features women's basketball teams from the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Duke and Tennessee, is being conducted in conjunction with the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl this month.

Bob Coggin, a local businessman and a board member and an immediate past chairman of the Peach Bowl, donated the tickets to the foundation, which in turn donated them to the school system's high school athletic programs.

Coggin said he is excited to have the ACC-SEC shootout come to Atlanta with the Peach Bowl, and said he challenged his fellow bowl board members to make similar donations to Boys and Girls Clubs, high schools and other organizations in their communities.

Coggin and Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce President Greg Wright, representing the Coweta Community Foundation, presented the donation to Coweta schools Superintendent Richard Brooks, Northgate Principal Wayne Outlaw, Newnan Principal Alan Wood, East Coweta Athletic Director Walter Drake and East Coweta varsity women's basketball coach Paula Jones.

"Our students will really enjoy these," said Brooks.

"This is a great Christmas gift," said coach Jones. "We always try to take our students to a game this time of year, but to be treated to this caliber of competition is fantastic. And with women's basketball growing like it is, our players will be very excited."

Coggin said that his board is excited about the event, too, because of the prestige it will add to events around the Peach Bowl, and because of the economic impact the series of events will have on the region.

The Coweta Community Foundation is a local nonprofit organization designed to assist community projects and charitable donations in Coweta County.
