Names needed for five schools

The Fayette County School System is looking for a few good names for some of its schools.

The system is soliciting the help of the community with the naming of two existing schools, the evening high and alternative schools, and three new ones, a proposed charter school and an elementary and high school.

The elementary and charter schools are expected to open in the future.

The high school will be built on Ga. Highway 85 south next to the new Sara Harp Minter Elementary School. It is scheduled to open during the 2004-2005 school year.

To assist with the naming of the schools, the school system has established a name selection committee, which will be responsible for recommending names for each of the schools to the superintendent, who will forward them to the Fayette County Board of Education.

A name committee recently selected and forwarded to the superintendent four possible names for the new elementary school on Hwy. 85 south, which was named Sara Harp Minter Elementary. The other three names Rest, Lisbon and Lucile Gable Lunceford will remain on the committee's selection list as possible names for the other schools.

As potential names are being brainstormed, the school name committee would like to hear from the community about any name ideas it might have for the schools. Recently, the Board of Education approved criteria for the naming of schools. Anyone wishing to submit a name should make sure the submission falls within the approved criteria.

Consideration of potential names will be given to educators who have made a significant impact to the Fayette County School System, individuals who have made a significant contribution to society, names of communities served by the school, roads, landmarks, geographical location in the proximity of the school, and former Fayette County schools no longer existing. In order to have a school named after a person, that individual must have been deceased for at least three years and have made significant social or educational contributions.

Community members wishing to submit a name for consideration should do so by Jan. 1. The submission should include justification as to why the school should carry the recommended name. Names can be submitted by mail, e-mail or in person at the Fayette County Board of Education offices.

Mailed submissions should be addressed to 210 Stonewall Ave., P.O. Box 879, Fayetteville, GA 30214. Direct submissions to Melinda Berry-Dreisbach.

To e-mail a name, send it to berrydreisbach.melinda@fcboe.org.
