Help offered to get the gas back on

AGL Resources Inc., at the request of the Georgia Department of Human Resources, will fund reconnection fees for natural gas customers DHR qualifies as eligible to receive low-income energy assistance funding.

AGLR also will provide employee volunteers to the department to assist with application processing.

Customers qualified to receive funding through the state's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program will not be required to pay the $25 reconnection fee associated with having natural gas service restored. AGL Resources will provide funds to Atlanta Gas Light to cover the reconnection fee for those qualified customers.

"Funding for reconnections is critical to qualifying low income customers for assistance through the state's LIHEAP program," said Jim Martin, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Human Resources. "For customers to receive energy assistance, they must currently have service with one of the state's natural gas marketers. We sincerely appreciate AGL Resources' contributions which are key to ensuring that those Georgians in financial need will have gas service this winter."

"We recognize the dire situation thousands of Georgians without natural gas service face this winter," said Susan McLaughlin, president and CEO of Atlanta Gas Light Company. "Together with the Department of Human Resources, AGL hopes to help bring gas service to as many qualified Georgians as possible. While this effort will address some immediate needs, a long-term solution must be created to ensure that people do not find themselves with no means of receiving service in the future. Atlanta Gas Light will continue to work to be a part of the solution."

To be eligible for assistance, a family must meet an income equal to or less than 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. For a one-person household, that would be $12,885; for two persons $17,415; for three persons $21,945; for four persons $26,475; for five persons $31,005; for six persons $35,535; for seven persons $40,065; and for eight or more persons $44,595.
