Brick scheme for PTC Wal-Mart may cause stir By JOHN
MUNFORD While it's likely no one expects Peachtree City's Wal-Mart to be as architecturally significant as, say, The Avenue at Peachtree City, a recent development in the Wal-Mart construction process has raised the eyebrows of city officials. And it all comes down to the bricks. When the city signed off on the final concept plat for the Superstore months ago, the exterior bricks proposed by Wal-Mart officials were also approved. But somewhere in the process, Wal-Mart changed its mind and decided to go with a different type and color of brick for its exterior. So the matter will be going back to the Planning Commission for discussion, said Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services. Williams has already seen an example in the metro Atlanta area of a Wal-Mart built with the newly requested brick material. Several members of the Planning Commission are expected to make trips of their own to view that store before making their decision. "I'd rather have the Planning Commission come to their own conclusion," Williams said. There don't appear to be any further problems with the construction plans submitted by Wal-Mart, Williams added. "Actually, the plan is pretty good," Williams said. "They did a good job on it." Grading for construction in the area has already begun. The traffic improvements promised by the developers are also underway. One of the most significant traffic improvements is the creation of a second westbound lane on Ga. Highway 54 West near the store entrance across from the Planterra Ridge subdivision. The "through" lane would allow westbound traffic to continue flowing through the traffic light at Hwy. 54 and Huddleston Road, as it will be separated from the existing lane by a concrete barrier. Eventually, both lanes of traffic will merge before the bridge over Line Creek that heads into Coweta County.
