Commercial zoning sought at former entrance to Wynnmeade

After losing its traffic-signalized entrance off Ga. Highway 54, Wynnmeade subdivision has already changed significantly this year.

But it's in the future that the big change could be coming, at least if a local developer gets land near that entrance rezoned to general commercial from its current residential zoning.

Piedmont Properties, Inc. has made the request, and the matter will be disucssed at Monday night's regular meeting of the Peachtree City Planning Commission.

The request involves 3.165 acres off Hwy. 54 to the east of Wynnmeade Parkway. Plans submitted as part of the rezoning show three buildings on the property.

The developer doesn't plan to attach the development to Wynnmeade Parkway unless that is requested by the subdivision's homeowners association. One of the entrances would be a right-in, right-out only design off Hwy. 54; another proposed entrance would be through the proposed "access" road that would run behind the property and connect with MacDuff Parkway.

Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services, has asked Piedmont Properties officials to meet with representatives of the homeowners association to narrow down the possible uses for the site. Williams said from the Wynnmeade residents he has talked to, he gathers that some people there wouldn't oppose commercial development in the way of a day care center or a bank.

It's a gas station or restaurant that would be likely to draw some opposition, Williams said.

Piedmont Properties is considering donating part of the 3.165 acre parcel to the city anyway along with the parcel on the opposite side of Wynnmeade Parkway. That would be done to replace a park area in Wynnmeade that Piedmont wants to use as part of its new subdivision north of Wynnmeade.

The city has not yet signed off on such a deal, however.
