City flag design, request to grade in flood plain up for PTC Council

A city flag for Peachtree City may be waving soon.

During its meeting Thursday night, City Council will consider a design for flag that has been approved by the city's Recreation Commission.

Council also will consider a variance request to allow land grading in the flood plain area of the Wilshire Estates subdivision near Ga. Highway 74 south and Holly Grove Road.

The new flag, which features a modified version of the existing city logo, also depicts a path leading into the sun. In a memo explaining the selection, director of leisure services Randy Gaddo informed council that the selection process included several public meetings and obtaining public input on the design.

Informal quotes secured by staff indicate the cost for an indoor embroidered flag would run between $200 and $250 while an outdoor flag would cost between $50 and $70, Gaddo wrote.

The request for the grading variance at Wilshire Estates from Centex Homes would involve grading activity at 16 lots in the subdivision. But staff is recommending denial of the variance not only to protect against a future flood hazard, but also to help protect the quality of the Flat Creek watershed in that area, according to Jim Williams, the city's director of developmental services.

The approved concept plat contained inaccurate or incomplete topographic information, Williams said.

If the variance is denied, it will likely result in the developer losing some lots in the subdivision, Williams indicated.
