Project Patriot marches into area businesses

Fifth-grade art students at Spring Hill Elementary School are expressing their support of the terrorist victims and their families through patriotic scenes on display at Fayetteville businesses.

Using glass bottles, balloons, foil and papiermache, students in Marie Baughman's and Victoria Perez's art classes constructed figurines representing the different people who were directly effected by the attacks.

Among the various figurines are firemen, Red Cross volunteers, nurses, policemen, angles, President George W. Bush and New York City Mayor Rudolph Guiliani. The figures are arranged against patriotic backgrounds and the entire work is entitled Project Patriot.

"The whole idea behind the project was to honor the people who were in the accident and are going through tough times," said student Kalie Aiken. "The figures were fun to make and they made me feel like I'm really helping."

Not only did the students enjoying working on the project, but businesses that have the artwork on display report that customers are admiring the students' work as well.

"Our customers have really enjoyed having the display in the bank," said Barbara Stevens, branch manager at Heritage Bank. "Every day I see people stopping by to look at it."

Project Patriot can be seen on display around town at various business and organizations including Heritage Bank on Jeff Davis, Kroger on Ga. Highway 85 south and at the Fayette County Board of Education.
