YMCA names top volunteer Michael Harris has been named 2001 Volunteer of the Year for the Fayette Family YMCA. Harris' first YMCA experience was in 1996 through the Y-Indian Guides. He has since been chief of three tribes and was Nation Chief for the 2000-01 program. An active leader and advocate for change, Harris has played a key role in developing the Nation's bylaws, expanding the program to include mother/child tribes and developing the Papoose program. He travels extensively as the senior packaging engineer for Lipton, but he maintains his commitment to the Fayette Family Y. Recently, he contributed some of his own resources to decorate the Indian Guide float for the 2001 Peachtree City July 4th parade, and won the Grand Marshal Award. For Harris, the Y is all about family involvement. The Peachtree City resident and his wife, June, have been married for more than 18 years, and they have two children Mason, 12, and Margot, 7. "I've been able to do many things with my family that I may not have been able to do without the Y," said Harris. "That's why I love volunteering for the organization." Harris is one of 18 outstanding volunteers who were recognized at this year's annual volunteer recognition ceremony earlier this month at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta.
