Fayette's top spellers advance to district competition Eighteen of Fayette's top elementary and middle school spellers competed at Sams Auditorium for the opportunity to represent the county in the upcoming District 5 spelling bee competition. Shannon Demons, a sixth-grader at Flat Rock Middle School, and Ehizele Osehobo, a fifth-grader at Spring Hill Elementary School, are the first-place winner and first runner-up, respectively, of the 2001 Fayette County Spelling Bee. Both Demons and Osehobo will represent Fayette at the district competition March 2 in Douglas County. It is no surprise that one of Demons' favorite subjects in school is language arts but she also enjoys Spanish and art. When Osehobo is not busy practicing his spelling skills, he says he likes to explore his musical talent by playing in the school's band and singing in the chorus. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball. Both the winner and the first runner-up received a plaque and a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble Bookstore. All contestants received a certificate in honor of their participation in the county's spelling bee. In order to compete at the county level, students had to win spelling bees at their individual schools. The countywide spelling bee is open to students in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh grades. The Fayette County Association of Educators and the Georgia Association of Educators sponsored this year's event.
