Big trade show headed for College Park Penton Media, a diversified business media company, has repositioned and renamed its key supply chain-related conference and exhibition from Supply Chain Expo to Supply Chain & Logistics to emphasize the critical role logistics plays in supply chain management. This is the only national event in the industry to cover the entire supply chain, and will take place Sept. 10-12, 2002 at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park, Ga., just 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta. "Re-positioning this event as Supply Chain & Logistics underscores the fact that warehousing, transportation, distribution, logistics technology and e-commerce are all critical components to integrate the supply chain, which absolutely must happen for a company to be competitive," said Brian Duckett, the event's show director. "In fact, industry sources maintain that business logistics expenditures in North America have exceeded $1 trillion for the first time last year, which represents over 10 percent of the country's gross domestic product. This highlights the substantial growth the logistics industry is experiencing as supply chain management becomes even more critical for businesses to succeed." In addition, Duckett said, the Internet has enabled software applications to foster increased visibility and collaboration so that, in the end, customers benefit by getting the right order for the lowest price at the right time. For the past two years, this conference and exhibition has been held in June in Chicago, a market that has become saturated with shows related to the supply chain. After conducting extensive research, Penton Media decided to shift the event to the end of the third quarter when reinvestment in supply chains should begin to occur, as the economy begins to improve. Atlanta was chosen for the site of Supply Chain & Logistics because it is a major logistics hub in the Southeast. The region's solid transportation infrastructure is based upon access to over-the-road, rail, air, and ocean services, and port facilities; and the city's metro area alone has over 330 million square feet of warehousing space. In addition, Atlanta offers easy access, with more than 80 percent of the U.S. population within a two-hour flight of the city. Atlanta also ranks fourth among U.S. cities with the most Fortune 500 headquarters, with a significant number of Fortune 1,000 companies in retail, wholesale, general merchandising, food consumer products, printing, chemicals, apparel, automotive, computers, electronics/electrical equipment, and health care. To provide more value to attendees and exhibitors focused on material handling, Supply Chain & Logistics will co-locate with the Atlanta Material Handling Show, which is organized by Professional Trade Shows Inc., a division of Penton Media. Supply Chain & Logistics will feature a three-day conference on Sept. 10-12, 2002, with approximately 30 keynotes and sessions that address the various segments of the supply chain. The event also will host a full two-day exhibition on Sept. 11-12 that will feature suppliers of products, services and solutions in key areas of the supply chain, including transportation, distribution, material handling, warehousing, customer service e-commerce,facilities and site selection.
