Veterans honored by school system

The Coweta County School System awarded eight World War II veterans their high school diplomas Monday, November 12, during Veteran's Day observances at Temple Avenue Park in Newnan.

Recipients included Clyde Milam, Lindsey Coggin, Milton Coggin, Gene Cauthen, Frank Hyde, Eli Crast, Oliver Wheeler, and Charles W. Brown (posthumously).

Superintendent Richard Brooks and Assistant Superintendent Blake Bass awarded the Newnan High School and East Coweta High School diplomas, during the Veteran's Day ceremony sponsored by the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Post 57.

Bass noted that the Temple Avenue park site of the ceremonies - which includes the Veterans' Memorial - was doubly appropriate, because for those who attended Newnan High School when called to service "this site would have the high school they graduated from."

The passage of House Bill 176 during this past session of the Georgia General Assembly allows for the awarding of a High School diploma to certain World War II veterans who left school to serve their country, and who meet specific criteria contained within the law.
