Fayette students going to state literacy competition

Two Fayette County students of English as a second language, Gladys Douglas and Martha Manzo, recently won the West Central Georgia EAGLE competition and will compete at the state level Jan. 24.

A third student, Krystyna Mularz, won the district level competition and also participated in the West Central Georgia judging.

The Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education through its office of adult literacy sponsors the annual Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literary Education awards program.

It's designed to create greater awareness of educational opportunities available in local communities across the state, and to foster greater involvement in lifelong learning pursuits.

The program recognizes and honors students who have demonstrated superior achievement in adult literacy classes and programs.

The three Fayette students currently take English classes in Peachtree City. In September, they were nominated by their instructors, Peter Volin and Nancy Ricker, for the program. The they went to the district level competition at Griffin Technical College, won there and moved on to the West Central Georgia competition in Clayton County.

Each nominee presented a short talk about herself and answered questions from a panel of judges.

The state competition will be in Atlanta Jan. 24. State winners are named Literacy Ambassadors for Georgia and will travel the state during 2002 promoting the Adult Literacy Program.
