'Peace Tree' lighting Friday

The Avenue Peachtree City invites friends and neighbors to "Peace Tree: Lighting the Night," a celebration of peace and unity, as community performers usher in the holiday season Friday, Nov. 23, from 6-7 p.m. with an uplifting message of friendship, patriotism, hope and joy. The musical program culminates in the lighting of the magnificent Peace Tree.

For the first year, this long-time Peachtree City tradition will take place at The Avenue Peachtree City's City Circle, at the intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 74. Circle entrances will be closed. Guests should enter at the Hwy. 54 traffic light or at Hwy. 74, adjacent to the post office. Golf carts should cross Hwy. 74 at Paschal Road. Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome.

More than 100 local performers will be showcased in the 45-minute musical program. These include Sandy Creek High School Select Chorus; Fayette County Youth Chorale; dancers from The Studio and Georgia Youth Ballet; soloists Michael Vaughn and Jennifer Trail; Nancy and Manuel Borrell; Three Quarter Ale and the Sandy Creek High School Drama Troupe.

Featured numbers will include holiday favorites such as "Let There Be Peace On Earth," Santa Baby," Mah Oz Tzur" (traditional Hanukkah music), "Betelehemu" (an African spiritual with percussion), and "Anthem," an uplifting tribute to patriotism from he musical "Chess." The program will culminate in a moving rendition of "Sing Joy," which will provide the audience a chance to sing along as the Peace Tree, a 25-foot Japanese cedar, is lit with 15,000 brilliant white lights.

Millie Lanier Turak, choral director at Sandy Creek High School, created the musical program. Also the founder and director of the Fayette County Youth Chorale, Turak has been recognized for her teaching excellence by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WXIA-TV.

Santa Claus will make an appearance and visit with children after the main festivities. Peachtree City Mayor Pro Tem Annie McMeniman is joining the celebration with a special reading. The Avenue Peachtree City stores are remaining open until 10 p.m. for the special evening, and food merchants will offer beverages, cookies and snacks at the Circle.

There are many ways for guests to participate. Special holiday flashlights to wave during "Let It Snow" will be available for a donation of $2 to foster Fayette County youth cultural programs. $2 donations for American flag lapel pins will benefit the September 11th Fund. Finally, U.S. Marines will be on-hand to accept new, unwrapped toys for Toys For Tots.
