Fire claims life of Fayette woman

A Fayette woman was killed Monday afternoon when her mobile home exploded and caught fire.

Jerry N. Harris, 61, was evacuated from the burning residence by firefighters who made attempts to resuscitate her to no avail, according to Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Harris was pronounced dead at Fayette Community Hospital.

The official cause of the fire has been determined as careless smoking in close proximity of a home oxygen cylinder, Nelms added.

Harris' home, on Alcona Drive in the Four Seasons Manufactured Housing Community, was completely destroyed. None of the nearby residences were damaged by the flames, however.

The call came in to the Fayette Emergency-911 Center at 3:07 p.m.; units were on the scene within seven minutes, Nelms said.

The last fire fatality in Fayette County was recorded in 1998.
