PTC merchants roll out welcome mat for shoppers Special to The Citizen
Peachtree City is rolling out the welcome mat and throwing open the doors to shops Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 to observe "Shop Peachtree City" weekend. The Citizen is supporting the occasion with publicity and special advertising rates for participating merchants. Mayor Bob Lenox issued a proclamation to "shop 'til you drop' at the Nov. 15 City Council meeting, encouraging residents to support Peachtree City's local businesses in the coming holiday season. "With concerns about the economy nationwide, it is important to show our local businesses that we support them," Lenox said. He noted that, in the past, residents grew accustomed to having to drive to the major malls around Atlanta to shop; however, Peachtree City merchants now offer a wide range of goods and services. "There is a great deal available here now that we are reaching the city's build-out, " Lenox said. "Hopefully, providing this showcase for our businesses will let the public know what is available to them locally." Lenox encouraged residents to check out centers they normally don't frequent, saying "Peachtree City's master plan called for commercial village centers to serve the surrounding residents. In some ways we've succeeded too well, with people getting in the habit of frequenting one center, while something new and different may be available just a couple of miles away." Lenox acknowledged that shopping locally certainly keeps tax dollars in the community, and keeps our local economy healthy by maintaining the jobs and the tax dollars they contribute to operating the city. "But with the holiday decorations and the special events planned, we hope 'Shop Peachtree City' weekend will also be a fun way for our residents to kick off the holiday season," Lenox said.
