Volunteer opportunities abound during holidays

During the holidays, everyone's mind is focused on giving, but everyone's time is often focused on getting that elusive gift for the father-in-law, the tree, the baking finished, the family together and more.

Hands On Atlanta is making it simple for individuals and/or groups to give something back during the holidays by coordinating service projects in communities throughout Atlanta.

Here are a few of the projects, some asking for time, others donations, available to south Atlanta residents:

Capitol Area Mosaic - Baskets for Seniors. This service opportunity provides a chance for the entire family to come together in the spirit of giving. Volunteers are needed to help assemble and deliver Thanksgiving baskets to seniors.

The East Point Community Action Team has a mission to mobilize, inspire and empower residents to share in the responsibility of building and strengthening their community.

They will be accepting donated toys and gifts for children, recreational and household gifts for adults, as well as books, clothing and toiletries.

Helping Hands Holiday Dinner. This annual carnival, which needs hundreds of volunteers, provides an excellent opportunity for group volunteerism.

Volunteers are needed to man carnival events such as moon bounces, face painting, arts and crafts and karaoke. Volunteers also are needed to serve and feed the homeless.

Teens at Work. This community resource and support program for Atlanta youth needs assistance in decorating three centers for Christmas. They will also be accepting donations of new children's clothing, books, gifts and toys.

National Urban Coalition for Peace and Unity. For those interested in ongoing volunteer opportunities, this organization is seeking volunteers to assist as mentors and help with special events and field trips. Clothing and food donations for children ages 1-18 also are needed.

These are just a sampling of the holiday volunteer and donation opportunities available to south Atlanta residents. To speak with someone from Hands On Atlanta, phone 404-814-1330 or e-mail tpaden@c21pr.com.
