County gets $1.8 million for drug rehab

The Fulton County Human Services Department, in collaboration with the Fulton County Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse, has received a $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help men move from substance abuse addiction to self-sufficiency.

Project Focus, operated as a partnership, adds a state-of-the-science Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program to the transitional housing services at Jefferson Place, a men's emergency shelter operated by the Human Services Department.

The three-year program, which begins March 2002, has three phases. The first is a period of medically supervised ambulatory detoxification, followed by the treatment program, which includes psychotherapy, education classes, vocational assessment and weekly drug screens. MHMRSA will provide psychologists, counselors and medical personnel to help clients kick their drug habits.

After becoming drug-free, participants will go through the second phase, a six- to 18-month residential transitional program that provides stability and assistance with training and employment. The final phase is at least six months of assistance in an independent living setting.

At 1135 Jefferson St., NW, Atlanta, Jefferson Place also provides a 150-bed overnight shelter and resettlement assistance.
