Veterans honored with overdue diplomas

The Fulton County Board of Education covered several items at its Nov. 9 meeting.

In a special ceremony, the board presented honorary high school diplomas to 12 World War II veterans who withdrew from Fulton County schools in order to join the war effort. Recognized were:

  • Edward Lee Barrett  West Fulton High;
  • Carl Frank Bone  West Fulton High;
  • Gaines Calvin Cole  Fulton High;
  • Henry W. Eberhart  Russell High;
  • Roderick Jerome Fisher  Russell High;
  • Harry Paul Lemming  Fulton High;
  • Clifford E. Sarratt - Fulton High;
  • Howard A. Webb  Milton High;
  • Boyce Carter West  West Fulton High;
  • Jerry Whiteman - West Fulton High;
  • Leon Andrew Willoughby  Fulton High;
  • James Wood Jr. West Fulton High.

Of the schools attended by the veterans, the only one still in existence in Fulton County is Milton High, in Alpharetta.

The others were either annexed into the city of Atlanta in the 1950s or closed as part of a 1980s school consolidation program.

The board recognized Mimosa Elementary student Mariel Waite as Georgia's 2001 third grade recipient of the Young Georgia Author's Writing Competition. Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education, the program honors one student at each K-12 grade level for original student writing.

The award was based on writing samples from the 2000-2001 school year. Berit Everhart, who graduated from Milton High in June, received the 12th grade honors.

Parklane Elementary School presented a proposal to the board to convert to a year-round calendar beginning with the 2002-2003 school year.

After more than a year of discussion and planning, the Parklane staff and community overwhelmingly voted in favor of the proposed calendar change. The board will vote on the proposal next month.

New members were approved to serve on the Health Education Advisory Committee. The committee screens and approves sex education materials used in Fulton County schools.

The list of student field trips was approved with the understanding that current events will continue to be closely monitored and trips could be cancelled due to safety considerations.

In preparation for the 2002 Georgia General Assembly, the board approved legislative position statements. These are posted at http://www.fulton.k12.ga.us/BOARD/webpacket, under Board Matters.

The policy and procedure review schedule was presented for information.

One policy revision, employee complaints, was presented for first reading. Policies governing acceptance of student course credit/grades and audience to visitors were approved.

The board also approved changes to the section in the leave of absence policy regarding pay for employees called to military duty. Also approved were out-of-state travel for employees and out-of-system travel for board members.

Several capital program items were approved, including:

Easement request by Greystone Power at Evoline C. West Elementary and a maintenance easement request at Findley Oaks Elementary;

Representatives from the city of East Point addressed the board concerning creation of a special district in the area near Camp Creek Parkway and I-285 and asked the school system to pledge future tax revenue to support the project. Before acting, the school system has requested an opinion from the state auditor and state attorney general.

The board authorized school system staff to develop a deferred compensation plan with matching employer contribution. The plan would have to be reviewed and acted on by the board before it could be implemented.
