Michael S. Reilly is getting his feet wet right out of high school by training for the future as a member of the U.S. Navy.

Reilly, who enlisted in August after graduating from Heidelberg American High School in Germany, is the son of Thomas and Daphne reilly of Peachtree City. Reilly trained in Great Lakes, Ill. at Recruit Training Command, tackling subjects ranging form naval history to physical fitness and shipboard damage control.

He also got a boost in self-esteem, winning an award during his training.

"I feel that I've accomplished something special," Reilly said. "My training has taught me how to be a good leader as well as how to follow orders. Personally, I've also learned a lot about myself."

Reilly joined the Navy for the educational benefits, saying he thought the experience "would give me a good start at life after high school."

He is one of hundreds of Navy recruits who make their way through the intensive training process, which begins with hours of paperwork, uniform issue, haircuts and more paperwork.

The training lasts eight short weeks, but the recruit division commanders who oversee the training are considered the best in their field, chosen for their experience and outstanding record of service.

A team of three commanders can take charge of up to 90 recruits at one time, turning them into good leaders, team players and above all, dedicated sailors.
