City may have cable competition

Senoia residents may soon have a choice in cable companies.

Newnan Utilities assistant general manager Ellis Candenhead appeared before the City Council Monday night and said his company wants to seek a franchise agreement with the city.

The company has had great success with its cable business and has even ventured into Tyrone into adjoining Fayette County, he said.

"We have 40 percent coverage of Coweta County right now," he said.

The company currently offers subscribers more than 90 channels, but plans to upgrade to digital service in early 2002 and offer hundreds of channels.

The company is building a satellite office at Thomas Crossroads, which will be even closer for Senoia residents.

Newnan Utilities offers 24-hour service during major outages and takes normal calls up to 10 p.m. at night, he added.

Mayor Joan Trammell said she had approached Newnan Utilities when she first took office about supplying cable service to the city.

The company can now offer the service since the city has grown so rapidly during the last few years.

Trammell said she would love to see competition come to the city.

"We constantly get calls at City Hall complaining about the cable service," she said.

Currently, the city is served by AT&T Broadband in Peachtree City.

Another advantage to Newnan Utilities providing service is the local channels offered by the company.

The council voted unanimously to pursue a franchise agreement with the company.
