Students make memorial quilt

A social studies project aimed at helping students learn about the different states of the United States is now serving a dual purpose.

Before the events of Sept. 11, Georgia Frisch's sixth-grade social studies class at Fayette Middle School was scheduled to create a quilt made up of squares representing each state. Students studied the states and learned their capitals, official flowers and birds as well as other unique aspects.

Students created the quilt by making paper squares containing pictures that identified a particular state. Due to the terrorist attacks which affected the entire nation, Frisch's class decided it would be fitting to turn the quilt into a memorial to those who had lost their lives during the incidents. The quilt is now on display at the end of the sixth-grade hallway.
