Can-A-Thon is around the corner

The Newnan Junior Service League is once again teaming up with the Newnan Food Pantry to bring holiday cheer to the county's families in need.

A tradition in Coweta County, this year's Can-a-Thon is scheduled for Nov. 27 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the drop-off point in the town square.

Striving to top the goal of 130,000 cans, contributions to the Can-a-Thon begin weeks prior to Nov. 27 with the Coweta County School System, local businesses and individuals.

This year, the league will have entertainment and local VIPs throughout the day.

WMKJ-FM (98.1) will broadcast from the site throughout the day and local Channel 9 will cover the event.

One of the secrets of success to the Can-A-Thon is the great number of people that take just a few minutes to drive through the square and drop off cans, allowing the Junior Service League to provide much needed food items to needy families in the community, as well as enabling the Food Pantry to stock its shelves and remain open to serve individuals and families in need year round.

Audrey Spragins, 2001 chairman for the Can-A-Thon, said, "We are hoping to get 130,000 cans this year, which is approximately 5,000 more than last year.

This is the 18th year the Junior League has sponsored the Can-A-Thon and Christmas in Newnan.

Last year, with the community's support, the Junior League was able to help more than 200 families, including the elderly, and the Food Pantry was able to provide food to families in need throughout the year.

If the Can-A-Thon is able to meet its targeted goal of 130,000 cans, the Christmas season will not be the only time food items are available for those in need.

A successful Can-A-Thon means the Food Pantry will have its shelves stocked all year to serve a significantly higher number of people in Coweta County, said Spragins.

The Newnan Junior Service League is committed to serving the community and its needs in many ways, one of the largest being Christmas in Newnan, an event which combines food items received from the Can-A-Thon with children's winter coats for selected families in need in the county.
