More water on the way for Coweta

Coweta County received good news this week from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The corps announced its intention to finalize the 404 Permit that will allow the city of Griffin to begin construction of a 475-acre Griffin/Spalding Regional Reservoir.

"This is a momentous day for the city of Griffin and the residents of Spalding, Pike, Coweta and Meriwether counties," said Rep. Mac Collins.

Coweta County has already signed a contract with Griffin to purchase any of the reservoir's excess water for its thirsty residents.

"The city of Griffin has worked diligently for many months, with all of the agencies involved in the permit process, and can now begin construction on the much-needed reservoir, which currently will serve over 55,000 people," said Collins. "I am delighted with the decision that the Army Corps has made to proceed with this project, and I look forward to the days ahead when the community will no longer have to fear conditions that, in the past, have caused their water supply to dwindle to near crisis levels."

As with any reservoir project, the city of Griffin was required to work with relevant agencies during the 404 Permit process to ensure that the project complies with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. This permit gives assurances that the construction project will protect the quality of the waterways associated with the reservoir, specifically the Flint River.

The draft 404 Permit has been signed by Col. Roger Gerber, the commander of the Savannah District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and will be forwarded to Griffin for acceptance and signature, and returned to the corps for final approval.
