Early Fayette family reunites

The progeny of Ira and Nelia Geneva Knowles White gathered at a grandson's home recently, swapping stories and sharing old photos.

The couple had married in 1898 and had 12 children, only one of whom is still living Ruby Elmira White Fields. They lived on north Ga. Highway 92, across from New Hope Baptist Church, and are buried in its cemetery.

Nearly 60 descendants met at the home of a grandson, Huie Bray, son of one of those 12 children, the late Nellie Geneva White, who married Lawrence Bray in 1923.

One of the offspring of another of the 12, Wesley Harris, son of the late Gladys White Harris, decided two years ago to put together a family pictorial history. With the help of dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins, he created a 150-page genealogical directory. He made 45 of them for those ordering one in advance and donated one to the Fayette County Historical Society.

The remaining 10 children of Ira and Nelia include Loy Alton White, Roxie Frances White Banks, John Thomas White, Effie Leonia White Renfroe, Wilbur Calvin White, Ira Dennis White, William Lawrence White, Evie Lynn White Walker, Reba Doris White Fields and Ruby White Fields.

Nancy Renfroe Hardy, left, shares a moment with Ruby White Fields, shown with a picture of her parents, Ira and Nelia White. Fields is the last of their 12 children. Photo/Carolyn Cary.
