Fayette literacy program seeks volunteers

The only requirements necessary to become a volunteer tutor are a love of reading, a willingness to help others and the ability to give one hour per week to work with a student.

This free help is offered to both children falling behind grade level in reading and for functionally illiterate adults.

Training for volunteers wishing to help school aged children will be offered Wednesday, Nov. 7 at North Fayette Elementary School, 609 Kenwood Road in Fayetteville, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The training program is designed to teach techniques tutors can use to support young readers and help them to become more confident.

For those wishing to help an adult learner, tutors are trained in three two-hour sessions at McIntosh High School from 7-9 p.m. The next training sessions will be Jan. 10, 15 and 17. These sessions use a learner-centered approach focusing on techniques such as word skill analysis, sound/letter relationships and word patterns.
