It's not too late to comment on new school districts

The Fulton County School System will conduct a series of meetings to redistrict south county elementary and middle school attendance zones to accommodate two new schools.

An elementary school under construction near the corner of Dodson and High Point Roads in Union City will open next fall as well as the replacement middle school for Paul D. West, being constructed on the same site as the current school.

The first round of meetings is complete. Staff met with parents and community members at two public meetings in October at Paul D. West Middle and Campbell Elementary schools.

Staff outlined the redistricting process and gathered input from members of the community during small-group facilitated sessions. The school system staff is in the process of reviewing comments collected. Using these comments and Board of Education approved criteria, staff will develop a series of attendance zone alternatives.

It is not too late to provide your input. The alternatives developed will be presented to the community during round two of public meetings. This is an opportunity for parents and the community to provide additional input prior to a staff recommendation to the Board of Education.

In the second set of meetings, community members can attend a meeting Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Campbell Elementary, or Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at Paul D. West Middle.

The staff will present alternative plans for elementary and middle school attendance zones developed with established criteria and community input.

Community members can comment on strengths and weaknesses of each plan in small-group discussions.

In the third round of meetings, community members attend a meeting Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. at Campbell Elementary, or Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at Paul D. West Middle.

Community members review and provide input on revised attendance zone alternatives.

Additional comments may be submitted by fax to 404-763-6771, through the system's Web site at www.fultonschools.org, by e-mail to planning@fulton.k12.ga.us, or via mail to Planning Office, 763 Cleveland Avenue S.W., Atlanta, GA 30315.
