Zoning issue postponed

The Coweta County Commission delayed a controversial zoning decision Tuesday night after one commissioner received some last-minute information on the proposal.

Vulcan Materials wants to expand its rock quarry operations further south on its Elzie Johnson Road property. But the quarry is near the fairly exclusive Arbor Springs subdivision and residents don't want any more blasting near their expensive homes.

Commissioner Leigh Schlumper asked the commission to delay the vote Tuesday after hearing the company's latest proposal.

"Vulcan put a new proposal, better buffers, giving up rights to the land to the north, protecting Elzie Johnson Road on the table about 15 minutes before the meeting started and they were things I just had not considered. To be fair to the other commissioners and to the people involved, I polled the board and asked if everyone would like more time to look over the options, and everyone seemed to be OK with it," she said.

Schlumper said she had been working with Commissioner Lawrence Nelms on the issue, since the quarry will be in his district after the new commission lines are drawn next year.

"This is not an easy decision to make. One minute I think I know what is right, and then somebody makes a new very valid point. I hope we will all do the right thing," she said.

The board will vote on the issue Nov. 6.
