The Georgian Terrace Hotel announces the Atlanta debut of The Spoken Word, a nonprofit series of speaking engagements open to the public that feature premier literary and performing arts talents in a thought-provoking and intellectual forum.

The Spoken Word series will run weekly until December and will be held in the Atlanta Conference Center at The Georgian Terrace Hotel. Working in partnership with Atlanta area Arts organization, The Georgian Terrace is planning to feature prominent talents on Sundays at 7 p.m., although scheduling may vary due to artist availability and travel plans.

The Spoken Word series includes a partnership with Public Broadcasting Atlanta's WABE FM 90.1, which will air selected Spoken Word programs at later dates. Other Spoken Word partners include the Alliance Theatre Company, The Atlanta Ballet, The Atlanta College of Art, The Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Emory University, The High Museum and the Woodruff Arts Center, as well as The Oxford American literary magazine.

The Spoken Word was created in New York at The Algonquin Hotel approximately five years ago by Atlanta-based Camberley Hotel Company.

It is a contemporary version of the famed Algonquin "Round Table" that earned The Algonquin a place in literary history in the 1920's. The daily gatherings of the "Round Table" at The Algonquin in the 1920's included the most quotable wits of the day - Dorothy Parker, James Thurber, Alexander Woolcott, Talullah Bankhead, and Robert Benchley to name a few.

The Camberley Hotel Company, which manages both The Algonquin in New York and The Georgian Terrace Hotel in Atlanta, has a long history of association with the fine arts. Company President Ian Lloyd-Jones is responsible for bringing The Spoken Word program to Atlanta as a way to support the city's cultural organizations, create an opportunity for intellectual discussion, and raise awareness about fine arts resources in Atlanta.

The 2001 fall season will continue until December, with dates based on speakers' availability. All programs will be held at The Georgian Terrace and are free of charge. Reservations are required. For more information, call the hotel at (404) 897-1991.
