The alternative transportation plan for the West Village area of Peachtree City, which includes more cart paths and a secondary road network, has been approved by the Peachtree City Council and the Planning Commission.

City officials hope many of the projects outlined in the plan can be funded by grants from the Atlanta Regional Commission, which would require a 20 percent match from city funds.

An advisory committee consisting of local citizens, residents who live in the area and commercial developers developed the plan with the aid of City Planner David Rast. The end result is a doable plan which will enhance alternate transportation such as golf carts and bicycles in the area, Rast said.

The plan includes a number of big-ticket improvements to the cart path system, including:

A cart path bridge over Ga. Highway 54 West near MacDuff Parkway, which would be designed as a "gateway" element to greet motorists entering the city;

Another cart path bridge parallel to the railroad bridge on Hwy. 54, which would be linked to tunnels under the bridge in a unique cloverleaf design;

A cart path tunnel under Huddleston Road near the railroad bridge;

A cart path tunnel under Hwy. 74 to connect the Marketplace and Westpark Walk retail developments; and

A cart path tunnel under Hwy. 74 at Paschal Road.

The plan also includes a secondary road system which would run parallel to Hwy. 54 West to the north and south. The northern road would begin around MacDuff Parkway and eventually tail through to hook up with Hwy. 54 at Huddleston Road through what is currently property occupied by Line Creek Baptist Church.

The southern access road, which would start at Line Creek Parkway, would eventually connect to Planterra Way. Several roundabout intersections are planned to calm traffic going through the Planterra Ridge subdivision.
