School of Arts & Sciences to showcase new programs at first CCSU reunion

Clayton College & State University will conduct its first-ever alumni reunion as part of the university's Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 homecoming celebration.

"By special invitation of the Clayton State faculty, any and all alumni of Clayton Junior College, Clayton State College or Clayton College & State University are invited to a special luncheon Saturday, Oct. 13," said Bryan Edwards, Ph.D., CCSU vice president for external relations.

The luncheon will start at noon in the atrium of the Harry S. Downs Center for Continuing Education. Also in attendance will be the deans of Clayton State's five schools, current faculty members, emeritus faculty and retired faculty. Special seating areas will be designated for students and faculty from each of the university's five schools Arts and Sciences, Business, Health Sciences, New College and Technology.

According to John Kohler, Ph.D., dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, his school will take the opportunity to highlight some new programs. "This is our first attempt to reach out and make contact with our alumni," he said. "Arts and Sciences is at a turning point as the university is moving rapidly ahead by adding new baccalaureate programs."

Indeed, most of Clayton State's newest academic programs reside in the School of Arts and Sciences: applied biology, psychology and human services, communication and media studies and the new bachelor of arts in music.

One of the highlights of the school's reunion luncheon will be a presentation on the relocation of the Southeast National and Georgia State Archives to the corner of Jonesboro Road and Clayton State Boulevard. Kohler said the alumni will not only get a report on how the Archives projects are coming, but also a preview of how these new facilities will relate to the creation of additional baccalaureate programs for the University.

Arts and Sciences alumni also will hear a concert from the university's new gospel choir, see a scene from "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," Edward Albee's classic drama that will lead off the Clayton State Theater's 30th anniversary season, and enjoy a magic show with professor of chemistry Jim Braun, Ph.D.

Although Clayton State is best known for serving the residents of Atlanta's Southern Crescent, including Fayette, the university's alumni are currently spread out over at least 100 of Georgia's 158 counties. "Since there are many Clayton State graduates who we have lost contact with over the years, we are asking for help from all former Clayton Staters," said Reda Rowell, director of development and alumni relations.

"Please contact our office, or, if you know of a former classmate who would like to attend the reunion, please let them know and ask them to contact us."

Cost of the luncheon is $5 per person, payable at the door, or by credit card with an RSVP.Phone 770-961-3580.
