Fire prevention week observed

The area unit of the Georgia Forestry Commission is asking local residents to observe Fire Prevention Week this week by using caution when burning outdoor debris.

According to the commission, 96 percent of all wildfires in Georgia are caused by humans. Of those, 47 percent are attributed to careless debris burning.

When burning a pile of leaves or limbs, it is important to make sure the area around the burn is well-cleared and equipment is on hand to extinguish the fire, according to the commission. Such fires should never be left unattended.

The commission offers assistance in installing firebreaks for farmers and woodland owners wishing to burn an area. It also offers other types of assistance and pamphlets on protecting property against wildfire.

For information phone the commission office at 770-254-7218.
