CARE sponsors projects for American Red Cross relief funds

Fayette's Children at Risk in Education program is devoted to helping students cope with social, behavioral and emotional issues that they face in daily life.

In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks, Fayette County School System CARE coordinator Karen Spangler thought the program would be the perfect venue to help students handle and deal with the emotions that these events have caused.

"Not only do some people feel vulnerable right now, but living so far away from the scene can make us feel like we are unable to help," Spangler explained.

Beginning Oct. 1, CARE launched a system-wide fund-raiser to collect money for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief effort. Throughout the month, participating schools are collecting pennies through a project called Pennies for Patriots. While there is no set monetary goal, Spangler says CARE is promoting healthy competition among classrooms to see which one can collect the most pennies.

The winner will receive some type of recognition, which is still to be determined.

"This activity is also about promoting teamwork. It is important for students to see the need to work hard toward a common goal. That is what we all are trying to do right now," Spangler said.

In addition to Pennies for Patriots, another project has been developed just for teachers. On two specific days this month Oct. 3 and 10 teachers can wear jeans to school for a $5 donation per day with all proceeds going to benefit the American Red Cross Relief Fund.

"We saw this as a programmatic opportunity and a great way for CARE to acknowledge to faculty, students and parents that there are things that we can do to help in this time of need," Spangler said.

Donations for Pennies for Patriots will be collected through Oct. 31.
