Mural adorns school, honors mom

Brooks Elementary School unveiled a new mural in the school's cafeteria during a recent PTO meeting/open house.

Renowned artist Nancy Lewis painted the historical scenes depicted in the mural. Lewis has three murals listed on the National Registry, two at the Capital City Club and one at Muse's Loft downtown.

She was looking for a way to memorialize her mother, who recently passed away and who tutored elementary children in art, so she was pleased when contacted by PTO secretary Kim Bishop to undertake the project.

Lewis earned a degree in fine art from Auburn University. Residential murals are her specialty.

The school honored her for her gift with flowers and a plaque. PTO President Debbie Clark also honored financial contributors who made the mural possible. Real estate agent and native resident Dave Edmondson gave a sizeable donation as did Board of Education member Terri Smith. Numerous PTO parents also contributed.
