Soldiers respond to local students

Oak Grove Elementary School students are writing letters of encouragement and gratitude to U.S. soldiers involved in relief efforts in New York and Washington, and in the U.S. response to the Sept. 11 attacks.

And some of the students have already received responses, said a school spokesman.

A military connection within the school is acting as liaison between the students and soldiers, forwarding letters to military personnel.

Students are identified by first name only, and responses are carefully screened by staff members before being passed on to students.

Here is one response:

"Dear Emily

"Thanks so much for your letter and the picture of both the American flag and the wonderful picture of the American soldier. Keep your cards and letters coming, and study hard.

"Thanks again!

"An American Soldier"
