Fayette County Evening High School moves to new premises

The Fayette County Evening High School has completed the move to the LaFayette Educational Center, on LaFayette Avenue just one block from downtown Fayetteville.

Since becoming the high school principal two years ago, Mary Perry, Ph.D., a long time resident of Fayette County, has worked to help locate the evening school to the new premises.

"The movement to a new location for the evening high school is a practical demonstration of confidence in the likely expansion of providing an education for all Fayette County students in the next century," said Perry. "This confidence will be translated into a variety of new developments."

The new campus welcomed its first students in August 2001. The majority of full time faculty members hold master's degrees or higher, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities fully accredits the evening high school.

Perry said the school offers a variety of academic and technical career courses, and some online courses are offered to qualifying students. She added that she is especially excited about the new learning resource center, an expanded career center, and up-to-date science and technology labs.

"The school year is divided into four mini semesters with students being classified as either part time or full time," explained Perry. "Part time students are enrolled in one of the other four high schools in the county and may take one course each mini semester, with their counselors' approval."

"At the same time," she said, "full time students are enrolled in two or more courses each mini semester and may receive up to six units of credit each school year. These full time students may graduate from this school; graduation exercises are held in December and May."

"It is significant that the process has begun to find a new name for the evening high school," said Perry. "With expanded offerings and new operating hours to begin in January, renaming the school is a priority."

Students wishing to register for the second mini semester may do so Tuesday, Oct. 9, in building D of the LaFayette Educational Center, from 4 - 6 p.m. The new telephone number is 770-460-3990.
