A new committee appointed to help name new schools has had its first meeting and is ready to submit proposed names for a new elementary school under construction on Ga. Highway 85 south.

The Fayette County Board of Education recognized that the official name selected for a school building or facility is a vital factor in the public image of the school system. It consequently appointed the committee, chaired by Juliette O. Babb, the system's executive director of general education/school improvement, to offer suggestions. Among the members appointed are Tom Kerlin, W. A. "Bud" Ballard, Marsha Crawley Mask, Carolyn Cary, Dennis and Beth Shell, Jeff and Julie Stubbs, and Mickey Harp.

Among the possible names the group was instructed to consider are educators who have had significant impact on the county school system, individuals who have made significant contributions to society, names of communities served by the school, roads, landmarks and geographical names in the proximity of the school.

If the name of the facility is to honor a person, only a deceased person may be considered for selection. The individual must have been deceased for at least three years and have made significant social or educational contributions.

The school to be considered first is currently under construction just north of the Lisbon Baptist Church, on Ga. Highway 85 south. It is situated in the old Rest community.

The committee suggested several names, including those of individuals and geographical and historical landmarks.

These recommendations will be forwarded to John DeCotis, superintendent of schools.
