County to hear controversial four-way stop request By DAVE
HAMRICK
Fayette County commissioners Thursday will hear from a Tyrone resident concerning that controversial four-way stop request for the intersection of Jenkins and Ellison roads. Trina Berry will address the commission during its regular business meeting, 7 p.m. at the County Administrative Complex, 140 Stonewall Ave., Fayetteville. Recent refusal by county officials to install four-way stop signs at the intersection brought a sharp rebuke from Tyrone Town Councilman Ronnie Cannon during a recent council meeting. "You'd think I was trying to pull teeth. They just don't want to work with us. It's that type of arrogance that burns my tail," said Cannon, who added the town would gladly pay the cost of erecting the signs if money is a factor in the decision. But it's not, said County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn. Traffic studies done in 1998 indicate a four-way stop at the intersection is a bad idea and won't make the intersection any safer, he said. Tyrone's Cannon says the intersection needs the four-way because of all the traffic generated by the schools at the Sandy Creek complex, but Dunn said there has only been one recent traffic accident there, and that was a rear-end collision some distance back from the intersection. "It's just based on common sense," Cannon said during the council meeting. "They need to get their head out of a book."
