New school construction underway

Fulton County School System parents, community leaders, and administrators celebrated the construction of a new community elementary school inSouth Fulton this week.

The groundbreaking ceremony was Tuesday at 9000 High Point Road in Union City at the Dodson Road Elementary School site.

An elementary school prototype designed by Collins, Cooper, Carusi architects, the new school will cover about 107,500 square feet on a 20-acre site.

The building is organized around a central exterior courtyard defined by a "Main Street" connecting the school's front door to its classroom wings.

Features include a gymnasium, cafetorium with full-service kitchen, music suite and performance area, media center, 42 standard classrooms and 10 special purpose classrooms that can accommodate five computer terminals each. A 9,000-sq. ft. play pad, three play structures, and a large grassed play area complete the outside features.

The school is scheduled to open in August 2002. A permanent school name will be chosen about six months prior to the scheduled opening date.

Later this month, the school system will begin a series of facilitated meetings to determine the attendance zone for the Dodson Road site as well as all other South Fulton schools.
