By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Opening Today Joy Ride Two guys play with a CB radio and inadvertently anger a killer and get him on their tail. The previews look suspenseful and Steve Zahn, one of the guys, is always good for comic relief. Rated R. Max Keeble's Big Move A Disney live action film focusing on a junior high student and his comic misadventures. There should be lots of laughs for the preteen crowd. Rated PG. Serendipity A romantic comedy starring John Cusack, who is best known for great romantic comedies, and Kate Beckinsdale. This looks very sweet, though the ending is fairly predictable. At least, it seems that it would be very predictable. This is probably your best bet for a date movie. Rated PG-13. Training Day Denzel Washington in his first role as a villain. He plays a Los Angeles policeman who is training Ethan Hawke, a rookie, on how to be a cop in L.A. This looks pretty good. Rated R.
Now Playing American Outlaws This film features some of the hottest young actors in Hollywood, according to Tiger Beat anyway. The film is about the Jesse James gang and, darn it all if they're not the most likable criminals ever. Rated PG-13. American Pie 2 The cast of the first film is reunited in this sequel set after the first year of college. This movie had some funny moments, though not as many as the original. Rated R. Captain Corelli's Mandolin A love story based on a historical novel set in Greece during World War II. Nicolas Cage plays an Italian soldier who falls in love with a Greek woman, who is engaged to a Greek fisherman. Rated R. Don't Say A Word This is the film starring Michael Douglas with the creepy preview. He plays a psychiatrist whose child is kidnapped and he must use a patient to help get her back. Rated R. Extreme Days Four guys into extreme sports go on a road trip. Don't expect many lewd jokes or adult themes because this is a good, old-fashioned family film. Rated PG. Glitter Mariah Carey stars in this film about a young singer searching for a break. She finds it at an open mic night and becomes a superstar. Hooray! Along the way she learns lessons about music, fame and love. Rated PG-13. Hardball Keanu Reeves plays a man who coaches a Little League baseball team in the inner city. This is based on a true story. Rated R. Hearts In Atlantis Based on one of the stories from Stephen King's book, this film focuses on an old man with mysterious powers, played by Anthony Hopkins, befriending a young boy. A sweet story, though with dark implications in other King novels, this film could be an early Oscar contender. Rated PG-13. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Have you seen any of Kevin Smith's movies, like Clerks, Mallrats, or Chasing Amy? If you have, you know Jay and Silent Bob, if you have not, you won't care about this movie. The movie is very funny, the cameos and Hollywood in-jokes are outstanding and the language is very, very raw. I thought this was Smith's best movie. It had a budget and a clear idea of what it wanted to be. That is a rare quality in films today. Rated R. Jeepers Creepers A horror movie about a brother and sister returning home on break from college. They find a scary creature in the basement of a church and bad things happen. I'd like this to be good, but I am not holding my breath. Rated R. Jurassic Park III This is a monster movie, plain and simple. Sam Neill returns and William H. Macy comes along for the ride. There are a slew of new dino foes and a lot of people playing dino chow. This is a fun movie, worth a matinee viewing. Rated PG-13. O A modern retelling of Shakespeare's Othello. this film is set in a private school and stars Julia Stiles, Josh Hartnett and Mekhi Phifer. This was a good film. Hartnett was very good as Hugo and Phifer is proving to be a fine actor, capable of carrying a film. Rated R. Planet of the Apes Mark Wahlberg stars as an astronaut who crashes into the Planet of the Apes. This is different from the original and directed by Tim Burton. Rated PG-13. The Glass House Leelee Sobieski stars in this film about a girl who must go live with her guardians after her parents' death. This looks kind of suspenseful but might be very bad. Rated PG-13. The Princess Diaries A girl goes from dork to princess in this film by the director of Pretty Woman. Julie Andrews stars as the girl's royal grandmother. This is very popular with families. Rated G. Rat Race Several teams compete in a race for $2 million while people in Las Vegas bet on which team will win. Cuba Gooding Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Seth Green and Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) star. Rated PG-13. Rock Star Mark Wahlberg stars as the singer in a heavy metal cover band who gets recruited to sing by the band he was covering. This is based on a true story and stars Jennifer Anniston as a heavy metal groupie. Rated R. Rush Hour 2: The fastest hands in the East team up again with the biggest mouth in the West when legendary martial arts daredevil Jackie Chan teams with comedic powerhouse Chris Tucker. Should be fun. Rated PG-13. Summer Catch Freddie Prinze Jr. stars as a poor boy playing minor league baseball. He falls in love with a rich girl, despite her father's protests. Matthew Lillard plays the funny guy on Prinze's baseball team. I'm willing to bet Prinze makes the majors and gets the girl. Rated PG-13. The Musketeer Based loosley on the story of "The Three Musketeeers" this tale follows D'Artagnan as he takes on the corrupt French monarchy. The fight scenes were choreographed by the fight choreographer of Jet Li's "Once Upon A Time in China." Rated PG-13. The Others A thriller set in England during World War II. This film stars Nicole Kidman and a slew of ghosts. The word on the street is that this is a creepy film. Rated PG-13. Two Can Play That Game This comedy is about a woman setting her man straight after she catches him stepping out with her arch enemy. Vivica A. Fox and Morris Chestnutt star. Rated R. Zoolander A silly film starring Ben Stiller as Derek Zoolander, a male model who will save the world. The preview is very funny and Stiller is a sharp satirist. I have high hopes for this one. Rated PG- 13.
