Local residents to walk 60 miles for breast cancer research A number of local residents will be walking this weekend to help raise money for breast cancer research. They will participate in the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day fund-raiser in Atlanta. The event will cover a 60-mile span over three days beginning Friday at Lake Lanier and ending Sunday in Atlanta. An estimated 2,000 walkers supported by 500 volunteer crew members are expected to complete the event. Funds raised by the walk will benefit non-profit breast health programs, programs that provide support services for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and cutting-edge medical research on breast cancer. The Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day is one activity of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, which began in 1993 as an initiative of Avon Products, Inc. to provide medically underserved women with direct access to breast cancer early detection and support services, and to fund medical research to fund the causes of and a cure for breast cancer and other women's cancers. Since the crusade began, revolutionary advances have been made in the study of biology and the development of technologies now being applied to the eradication of breast cancer.
