The organizers of the 2nd Annual Memory Walk want to spread the word that, while they are on track in their fund raising efforts, spots are still available for those wishing to walk this Saturday. More than 400 had pre-registered as of Friday and registrations were continuing to come in via fax and mail throughout the weekend. The official deadline for the walk is tomorrow. Funds raised from the Memory Walk will benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Money will be used for research, counseling, financial assistance, support groups and educational programs fro those coping with the disease. The "Walk" is much more than a walk - it is also fun. The Peachtree City Running Club will host a run beginning at 9:15 a.m. for those who prefer a faster pace. The Peachtree City Jazz Edition will entertain the crowds and, according to Fayette County Co-chair Iola Snow, "We are hoping to have a barber shop quartet" to serenade walkers and runners. Uncle Rich from Mix Radio will add his own touch of fun as the emcee for the event. Once again, instructors from Gold's Gym will hold a short warm up for walkers to help them limber up and get prepared for the scenic walk through Peachtree City. The Peachtree City Kiwanis will also help out for the second year, providing hot dogs and chips after the walk. Additionally, coffee, juice, water, bananas and granola bars will also be served. Walkers raising $50 or more will receive a t-shirt. Additionally, other prizes donated by local merchants will be given out to walkers after the event. Baci Italian Restaurant, Pascal's Bistro, Village Café, Yankee Candle, Gold's Gym and Publix are just a few who have provided prizes. Iola Snow and Former Peachtree City Mayor Fred Brown are co-chairs for Fayette County, Dr. Paul Colon is chair for Clayton County and Jerald Connally and Gina Weathersby are co-chairs for Coweta County. Many others in the three-county area have spent countless hours to make the walk a success. Geri Cowen is in charge of the food committee, Lyn Amos and Tony Armstrong have spearheaded the efforts to attract the many walkers and teams, Melissa McKinnon is chairing the awards committee. Denise Buchanan has worked to coordinate the numerous events to build enthusiasm for the event and Don Ethier is serving as the logistics chair. Rich and Dede Gauthier were responsible for public relations, Beckie Hughes and Nancy Neff are serving as registration chairs and Bob Neff is in charge of record keeping. Congressman Mac Collins and his wife Julie and County Commission Chair Greg Dunn are currently planning to walk Saturday. Other elected officials have also been invited to walk but have not yet committed. Numerous sponsors have signed on to help the organizers reach their goal of $125,000. Coweta EMC Operation Roundup, Talbot Bank, Print Graphics, Gold's Gyms of Fayette County, the Rotary Club of Peachtree City, Melwood Spring Water, Village Pharmacy, Coweta-Fayette EMC, Leslee Mitchell, Joel and Geri Cowan, Floy Farr, Ralph and Brownie Jones, Governor's Glen, Dogwood Forest, Ashley Glen, the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center and Peachtree National Bank have all contributed. Walkers living in Peachtree City are being encouraged to drive their golf carts to the event if possible due to parking limitations. The event walk will be held at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. There will be a separate table for those who have pre-registered to decrease registration time. For information, Fred Brown, 770-487-8397 or Iola Snow, 770-486-6991.
